Innovation and rural potential: reinterpreting tradition

The development of an innovative ecosystem in the Galician countryside presents an opportunity to generate economic activity and encourages diversification

Ancestral knowledge of agricultural resources as well as the excellent quality of primary sector products has made Galicia internationally renowned. Its wine, dairy industry, meat sector and the wide range of first-rate market garden produce are perfect examples of products that truly embody the Galicia Calidade quality seal. The producers and emerging industry display the competitiveness and strategic vision of Galician business, open to investment, exports and sustainable growth.

In Coristanco, in the fertile Bergantños area, the work of Lucía Calvo and José Iglesias is recognised by leading chefs in Spain for the market garden produce and cereals that they grow. Their company, La Despensa D’Lujo, supplies delicatessen products to the kitchens of Celler de Can Roga, Mugaritz, and the canteens of the corporate headquarters of Galician multinational Inditex, as well as being lauded by chefs such as Dani García and Alberto Chicote. Calvo and Iglesias are driving a transformation in understanding of the countryside under the criteria of sustainability, collaborative work, innovation and positive impact. Under these criteria, they have carved out a niche for themselves in the best kitchens with more than thirty renowned products, all organically grown, including the tear pea, pink bean, beans, chickpeas, quinoa and lentils, among others.

In the Biosphere Reserve in Paderne, the company Orballo demonstrates that Galicia's land has many possibilities, even including the cultivation of tea, an unusual crop in the area until this company’s initiative. This firm, created in 2012, organically produces a wide range of aromatic plants such as basil, cayenne pepper, mint, and black pepper, among many other products. Their innovative process has lead to the development of capacity to add value to their products, creating an attractive way to commercialise their original herbal teas and connect with new consumers.

Galicia is a fertile land for ideas, as shown in the work that has been carried out for years by Hifas da Terra, a biotechnology centre focused on the investigation and innovation of nutraceutical products using medicinal fungi. This business in Pontevedra has developed high value products from fungiculture to improve the health of people who suffer from autoimmune, cardiovascular, or neurodegenerative diseases or even cancer. Established in the market for several years, and with a presence in international markets, Hifas da Terra is also a pioneer in the manufacture of dermo-cosmetic products and food supplements from organic crops.

The Galician dairy sector is also moving forward in a  process of transformation with the development of new dairy products which go beyond traditional milk production: desserts, diet cheeses, whey products and the production of A2 milk, a product which lacks the protein responsible for the majority of intolerances and digestive problems associated with milk consumption.

The backbone of the Galician rural environment is formed of spaces for arable and livestock farming, but also of business parks available for transformative industry capable of taking advantage of Galicia’s talent and its symbiotic relationship with sustainability.
