The wind power industry in Galicia, secure and well planned
The fight against climate change and the European Green Deal, which is intended to bring about a modern, competitive economy that uses resources efficiently, have led to a boom in renewable energy sources in a variety of sectors.
The race for decarbonisation has started, and it has done so with a clear goal for Europe: to reach climate neutrality by 2050 and cut CO2 emissions by 55% by 2030. Against this background, Spain's active search for clean energies has accelerated and Galicia is a key region for the development of wind power, not only because of its weather and geography but also because of its experience with consolidated projects.
Galicia, the number two region in wind power generation
As they are well aware of the need to progress towards energy transition, companies in Galicia continue to develop sustainable initiatives. It is with good reason that this Autonomous Region is number two in Spain, after Castilla y León, in generating electricity from clean sources, which account for 76% of its energy mix.
Galicia also holds second place in the country in wind power generation, providing 18.2% of the country’s total, according to data in the latest renewable energies report from the Spanish Electricity Transmission Company, the national grid (data for 2020). These figures point to the importance of an industry that is key for the new energy system and which, as its presence grows, is strengthening its commitment to sustainability.
A model that provides guarantees to the sector
The urgent need to develop renewable energy projects that ensure compliance with European environmental commitments requires the utmost cooperation between government agencies and the private sector. This is why the Xunta de Galicia has demonstrated, through a variety of initiatives, its firm commitment to green energies and the wind power industry. Galicia’s first vice president and Regional Minister of Economy, Industry and Innovation, Francisco Conde, has stated that “Galicia has a model that protects and ensures the legal security of the projects and the necessary respect for the environment.”
To ensure greater transparency, the Xunta de Galicia has sponsored a series of methods for providing information to city councils, to citizens and to all stakeholders, especially through its information guide. In addition to meetings in the different towns and cities, it also offers landowners the Information Office where they can learn about the methods and criteria for assessment, as well as the regulations to classify and qualify land. Similarly, developers who want to promote a project in this sector can consult the wind farm catalogue, which is available at the Galicia Company Office.
2030 Energy Agenda in Galicia
With the aim of promoting a low-carbon economy based on cleaner energy sources and ensuring sustainable mobility, Galicia is drawing up its 2030 Energy Agenda.
This plan, which is intended to lead the way in the energy transition, seeks to increase the efficiency of all sectors: public, industrial and domestic.
These initiatives and the road map designed by the Xunta de Galicia reflect the commitment of the region to combine industry and sustainability and to become of the greenest regions in Europe.
