By 2030, the aim is to have a greener and more sustainable Galicia in which 85% of the electricity generated will come from renewable sources

The 2030 Galician Energy Agenda, which has just been approved by the Regional Government of Galicia, establishes a series of intermediate quantitative objectives to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. The aim is to invest around 630 million euros during the 2022-2024 period and to mobilise public-private partnerships worth more than 1.5 billion.

With this Agenda, Galicia, which is already a reference in renewable energies, intends to work towards a sustainable model and a new mix of energies through new technologies, such as green hydrogen, renewable gases and the circular economy, biofuels, energy storage or offshore wind power.

Galicia's 2030 Energy Agenda focuses mainly on promoting measures that allow households to consume more efficiently and thus reduce their electricity bills. Together with families, the Galician Government will pay special attention to SMEs, self-employed people and industry with the development of new actions such as incentives to improve energy infrastructure in industrial parks and the implementation of business energy communities.

By 2030, the aim is to have a greener and more sustainable Galicia in which 85% of the electricity generated will come from renewable sources, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% and to achieve a 40% improvement in energy efficiency in final consumption. It also seeks to benefit families with measures that favour energy savings and efficiency. The actions to be carried out are aimed at Galician households, which will receive 159 million euros.

The 2030 Galicia Energy Agenda establishes 56 concrete measures around seven plans of action. The first will focus on the development of renewable energies by seeking to increase this technology by taking advantage of local energy resources. It will also focus on the integration of clean energies and the promotion of energy storage, as well as self-consumption. Another of the measures highlighted is the promotion of a renewable hydrogen Hub in the Community.

The second plan of action will revolve around the circular economy, for which the energy recovery of waste for self-consumption, the incorporation of renewable gases in the energy system or the implementation of advanced solutions are included.

Thirdly, there will be a firm commitment to sustainable mobility, promoting renewable energy sources in transportation and a green corridor in the north, as well as the renewal of the vehicle fleet and the promotion of electric vehicles.

The fourth plan of action aims to decarbonise the different sectors, from economic activities with the creation of the Empresa Sostenible de Galicia (Sustainable Business in Galicia) seal, to residential buildings, the tertiary sector, public administrations and the primary sector.

Eco-efficient industrial parks

The fifth plan of action, and one of the priorities, will be technological development and innovation through projects within the framework of the Smart Specialisation Strategy (RIS3) of Galicia, agreements with institutions, as well as the manufacturing of components in this field and the promotion of eco-efficient industrial parks, which will receive 17.5 million euros.

In this regard, incentives are expected to be activated both for the improvement of energy infrastructure in industrial parks and for the promotion of business energy communities. The Regional Government of Galicia is already working with Tecnópole on the implementation of the first energy community, which will benefit around 50 companies. This project in San Cibrao das Viñas would have an installed capacity of 2MW through the availability of space on the roofs of buildings and land for the generation of 2,500 MWh/year.

The sixth plan of action focuses on measures that will be adopted to improve the Just Transition with energy saving plans for families, training programmes for professionals related to new energy sources and the fight against energy poverty.

The final plan of action looks at the measures to be designed in accordance with the requirements of the European Next Generation funds, as well as the Just Transition funds, and from the point of view of public-private collaboration to obtain greater financing for the programmes.
