A drone to combat the Asian hornet
Aerocameras has been offering 360º solutions in the drone sector since 2007. 50% of its work is centred on training, an area in which it is a national leader, with 35,000 students trained and 40 examination centres throughout the Iberian Peninsula and islands. From its headquarters in Lalín, it offers online and in-person training as well as specialised training for police officers, firefighters or surveyors, among other professionals.
The other pillar of the company's activity is professional services across different areas from technical inspections, security and surveillance to topography, agriculture, logistics and audiovisuals. This also includes the development of drones and solutions for devices of this type. With a turnover of 4 million euros in 2021, the firm has 55 employees.
BFAero Participant
In 2019, Aerocámaras became part of the first edition of the BFAero accelerator, under the Aerospace Pole of the Galician Regional Government. And it did so with Drone Velutina, a revolutionary project which guarantees that 100% of the nests found on the surfaces they act on will be eliminated. They were pioneers, patenting the drone and acquiring the necessary qualifications and permits to operate it. Experience helped them improve the product and start marketing it. Today they have a very powerful system, both in terms of hardware and software, which they have already presented to the Galician Regional Government with a view to reaching a sales agreement.
The Velutina Drone is a very robust system that is intended for emergency teams, such as the Supramunicipal Emergency Group (GES), 112 (Emergency Services) or firefighters, and has already been tested with great success by electrical companies and the industrial sector. It is intended for cases in which access to the Asian hornet nest is practically impossible by any other means. The company's CEO, Jaime Pereira, explains that these are highly sensitive operations, situations in which it would cost three times as much to operate otherwise.
The device developed by Aerocámaras lasts for 35 minutes and incorporates a platform with a three-litre biocide tank and a telescopic pole that to up to four meters in length. Once the drone reaches the nest, the solution is injected with the help of a laser pointer and two cameras on the drone and on the pole for better precision and to guarantee proper discharge.
The liquid is in the nest in as little as five seconds. So, there is no contamination outside the nest, and the effectiveness is 100%. The system carries a marker that places a red ribbon on the nest to indicate that it is inactive. The company thus guarantees a service in which they offer a reduction of costs, time and risks.
Other projects
Among its logistics services projects is the one developed by its subsidiary Drone To Yacht, for luxury delivery services. In 2021, it operated in Ibiza, but the most recent project was this summer's operations in Menorca with the Miramar restaurant in Cala Blanca. Customers could make their product selection, order from the restaurant via the app and then wait for it to arrive, literally flying.
Another of its subsidiaries, Drones Maritime, is a strategic alliance with the company Peninsula with which they have designed a flight project using unmanned aerial vehicles to intercept ships passing through the Strait of Gibraltar. These devices can carry up to five kilograms of cargo and are designed for logistical shipments, such as document transport or ship inspections.
Looking to the future, the company's challenges are focused on the internationalisation of its business, an objective that has led it to purchase a company in Colombia from which to operate in four Central American countries.
