The quality of Galician beverages

Comparte este artigo

Galicia is known for its good food and good drinks. Galician products are revered in both their own and foreign markets. And many of these beverages, in addition to being produced in the Community, have a quality seal that distinguishes them from others and guarantees their origin and characteristics

All products and services certified with the Galicia Calidade (Galician Quality) seal guarantee users and consumers that they have passed the established quality controls and regulations, in addition to certifying their Galician origin.

Aside from food, wine, dairy products, hospitality and jewellery, beverages are also eligible for the seal, specifically water, soft drinks, beer and spirits.

Mineral waters

Natural mineral waters are governed by general specifications for the use of the Galicia Calidade guarantee mark, in which these beverages are defined as microbiologically healthy beverages that have their origin in an underground stratum or deposit and that come from a spring or can be artificially captured by means of a borehole, well, ditch or gallery, or a combination of any of these.

The industry is asked to carry out surveillance and control operations on the activities carried out within the perimeter of protection of the spring, in order to avoid possible contamination. It is also required to manage the spring avoiding overexploitation that would cause changes in the essential characteristics of the natural mineral water.

The following are certified by Galicia Calidade: Magma Cabreiroá sparkling water, Mondariz sparkling mineral water, Fuente del Val mineral water, Mondariz natural mineral water, Cabreiroá natural mineral water and Magma de Cabreiroá magma origin mineral water.

Indeed, Agua Mondariz was one of the first companies to obtain the Galicia Calidade distinction for its products 24 years ago. Alberto Cabadas, head of the Mondariz plant, explains that for them this distinction "is a source of pride with which we can represent the whole of Galicia". The company sells its products in more than 50 markets and reserves the seal for those that best represent Galicia.

In addition, two fundamental qualities stand out. From a social perspective, being a benchmark in Galicia and based in one of the smallest towns in the Community, where they are the engine of the local economy. And, in terms of food, to be able to produce a balanced, soft water with all the minerals the organism needs.

Beers, liqueurs and soft drinks

The specific conditions for beers concern extra packaged beers and extra unpasteurised beer. To date, six Hijos de Rivera products have been certified with the Galicia Calidade seal: 1906, 1906 Black Coupage, 1906 Red Vintage La Colorada, Estrella Galicia, Estrella Galicia 0.0 and Estrella Galicia Cerveza de Bodega.

There are also specific conditions for the granting and use of the Galicia Calidade guarantee mark for pomace brandy and the liqueurs and creams made from it. In order to use the guarantee mark, these products must prove that they are covered by the IXP Licores y Aguardientes de Galicia.

In addition, the pomace brandies and lees used in fermentation and distillation will be obtained from grapes harvested in the geographical area of Galicia, while it is expressly forbidden to add any other alcohol of wine or agricultural origin to the distillate in any of the production processes of the product.

The liqueurs included in the list of beverages certified by Galicia Calidade are aguardiente, white aguardiente, herbal liqueur, cream liqueur and coffee liqueur from Nor-Ibérica de Bebidas and white pomace brandy aguardiente, coffee liqueur, cream liqueur, aguardiente liqueur and herbal liqueur from Customdrinks.

In the case of soft drinks, the following varieties of Customdrinks cider obtained the seal: cider, cider with fruit juice, organic cider, natural cider and dry cider.
