And on the dessert menu... innovation
Biobocado's aim is to offer its customers healthy food and a different way of eating, something that is physically, mentally and emotionally beneficial. Its founder, Noelia Ron Vega, who was already very involved with healthy eating on a personal level as she gave workshops aimed at applying this philosophy to people's daily lives, noticed that there was no service that offered meals of this type and decided to get down to work.
Biobocado plans to launch a line of healthy snacks that it has been able to create thanks to being a beneficiary of the Innovation Vouchers sponsored by the Xunta de Galicia through the Agencia Gallega de Innovación (Galician Innovation Agency). These are gluten-free, vegan products, made from natural ingredients, a piece of unfinished business they had been working on, given that, in addition to the fact that traditional confectionery contains a lot of sugar, it's difficult to achieve good results without gluten. With the support of this programme, they were able to hire external consultancy services that facilitated their research in this field to develop this new product, which is alternative, tasty and at the same time healthy.
Biobocado offers its customers a menu of balanced dishes based on the Harvard plate, a nutritional guide that divides a dish into three parts, half fruit and vegetables and the other half divided equally between proteins and carbohydrates. Its recipes consist of organic raw materials, whole grains or tubers and quality proteins, although not necessarily of animal origin. It is a very natural type of cuisine that does not involve much mixing of ingredients, which is why they have a wide variety of gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian dishes to serve people who have intolerances or special dietary requirements.
The key to the success of this young business from Lugo is the proof that good nutrition has a direct benefit on the body and the users themselves experience this by eating healthily. "The raw material we work with is of exceptional quality, we cook without frying and we don't recycle any type of oil. Quality encompasses every product, not only the ingredients, but also the preparation, and this is automatically reflected in how good our food makes people feel", explains the founder. Personal service is another of their distinguishing features, in fact, although they have a home delivery service, most of the sales volume is generated in the physical shop.
Noelia Ron would like to be able to continue incorporating new products and open more shops: "I don't want to give up a small business with direct contact with the customer because I think it is a point of quality, but a natural evolution would be to be able to open other premises like this in other locations or cities, but it is better to play it safe and little by little".
Innovation Vouchers
The Innovation Vouchers programme aims to promote the first steps towards innovation in Galician micro-enterprises and SMEs. The programme covers various lines and supports activities that can take place immediately by contracting external professional services to attain a qualitative and quantitative leap in their R&D&I activity in the short term and that have a direct impact on their capacity to respond to the current challenges facing companies. Following the success of the first call, the 2023 edition has a budget of 750,000 euros, which is expected to raise to over one million.
