When the "cocktail hairdresser" becomes a piece of fine craftsmanship

Laura Delgado, a ceramist from Cambre (A Coruña), is the creator of the unique pieces that make up the collection of vases for which she received the Galician Crafts Award 2022

In 2015, she decided to take one last shot as a craftswoman by opening her Cambre workshop and, little by little, she made her living through the work that came out of it until actively working on creating unique pieces for renowned Galician restaurants. Laura Delgado's creations can be purchased both through her social networks and in her own workshop, as well as in some physical shops in Santiago de Compostela, Pontevedra and Madrid.

Delgado already belonged to Artesanía de Galicia when "Artesanía no Prato" was created, a project driven by the brand with the aim of establishing a relationship between craftsmanship, design and gastronomy, raising visibility for the potential of artisan pieces as a support for culinary creations.

This was how, taking advantage of the opportunities that presented themselves and the boom in the hotel and catering industry, especially in the city of A Coruña, Laura Delgado's commitment to professionally dedicating herself to craftsmanship became more and more solid. Today, leading chefs such as Pepe Solla, Lucía Freitas or Juan Crujeiras present their gastronomic creations in pieces of her work, as well as a multitude of prestigious restaurants such as Millo, A Maceta, Sinxelo, Morrofino, or those of the Peculiar Group, among others. "Basically, all types of catering utensils made of stoneware and porcelain, hard and resistant materials of many types, colours and textures, which in short give rise to practically infinite finishes", she explains.

Inspiration: Ourense Carnival

Delgado has just received the Galician Crafts Award 2022 for her collection 'O mundo do revés. Coctelería peliqueira', a collection of cocktail glasses that imitate the concept of the so-called "tiki" glasses of Polynesian culture, but in this case decorated with motifs of the characters of the traditional carnival of the Ourense province.

After spending a long time wanting to do something special for cocktails and to get out of routine workshop activities, based on the fact that ceramic glasses are mainly present in tiki cocktails and, after much thought, looking for a more personal sense, she found her inspiration on Instagram, which allowed her to make her original creation come to life.

Galician handicrafts

For Delgado, in several ways, the Artesanía de Galicia brand contributes "the fact that a multitude of workshops have joined together in recent years raises the level and improves the quality, which benefits the brand, enhances it and gives us much more visibility as a whole". Regarding this visibility, she highlights that the brand offers the opportunity to participate in campaigns, fairs and events that would not be possible on an individual basis.

The origins of Galician handicrafts go back to an initiative taken by the Galician Association of Craftsmen in the 1990s. The model was adopted by the Xunta de Galicia in 2000, becoming an official brand with its own regulations whose main objective is to serve as an umbrella by offering a common, harmonious, coordinated and representative image of Galician craft products. A seal of prestige that represents a sign of identity and a guarantee of quality for consumers.
