From a stationery store to international contract company

Throughout its 34-year history, Sutega, the group from A Coruña, Spain, has been committed to business diversification and internationalisation, positioning itself as one of the leading firms in the contract sector

The Galician contract, which includes furniture and interior design companies specialised in supplying chain stores and hotels, among other lines of business, is already a leading example in the international context thanks to the commitment of its companies to diversity, innovation and the constant search for new markets.

In this context, the A Coruña-based Sutega stands out, a company with more than 30 years of experience that took its first business steps in 1989 as a technical stationery store. The path to becoming a leading business group in the contract sector, operating in more than 45 countries, has been marked by diversification and the constant search for business and new opportunities. "It has been the key to our change of activity, going from having the store with a few pieces of furniture to being a group of companies working for large organisations such as Inditex, Telefónica, BBVA, Ritz-Carlton, Garrigues, Prosegur or Denodo", explains Rubén Utande, CEO of the company.

With a team of 250 people, 9 offices and a turnover of 46 million euros in 2022, Sutega focuses on offering a comprehensive interior architecture service for retail, corporate, hotels, restaurants, geriatrics or the so-called co-living, a new trend in the residential sector consisting of the shared use of common spaces.

The evolution of the company has been driving its own international expansion, a key factor in the company's history. "Our concern has always made us be very aware of what was going on around us, attending fairs and events all over the world. But the leap was with Inditex, when in the 90s they asked us to set up an office in Hong Kong. And from then on, from Galicia to the world: Mexico, USA, Europe. There are no borders for us", states Utande.

With an eye on the future, they are focused on reinforcing their "Design&Build" model, a proprietary methodology when building spaces, minimising time and costs, but with maximum control and quality thanks to the optimisation of their resources and capabilities.

Contract with a Galician accent

The figures show just how well the Galician contract is doing, with it exceeding 10,000 projects in 800 cities around the world, being a clear element of internationalisation of the productive fabric of the Community. For Utande, this positioning stems from two main reasons. "On the one hand, the value of Galician craftsmanship and the proximity to the raw material: wood. On the other hand, in Galicia we have a great engine of development, the Inditex group, which has meant that in this region there is a technical, human and industrial development that is at the forefront at international level", he explains.

Within the framework of the Agenda for the promotion of the forest-wood industry, the Regional Government of Galicia recently issued a call for help for the valuation and second transformation of the Galician forest industry and the contract, backed with 2.6 million euros for the 2023-2024 period.
