Recognising the excellence of Galician craftsmanship
The Fundación Pública Artesanía de Galicia (Galician Crafts Foundation) has been organising the Galician Crafts Awards since 2014 with the objective of stimulating Galician craft creation and highlighting the sector as an economic and cultural driving force in Galicia. In addition, through the contest it seeks to promote the work of professionals, attract and develop new talent by encouraging generational change and to foster the introduction of innovation and design in production processes.
Year after year, they are an excellent showcase for the quality and creativity of Galician crafts. In 2022, the Premio Artesanía de Galicia went to "The world upside down. Coctelería peliqueira", by the ceramist Laura Delgado (Cambre, A Coruña), a collection of porcelain cocktail glasses, which imitate the concept of tiki glasses and are inspired by the traditional carnival in the province of Ourense. The president of the Friends of Linen Association, Carmen Riveiro (Zas, A Coruña), received the award in recognition of her professional career as a weaver and her work in the recovery and promotion of linen. Finally, the Premio Bolsa Eloy Gesto went to the milliner Julia Vilariño (Pontedeume, A Coruña).
Throughout the history of the contest, other figures such as José Luis Latas Vilanova, Rodrigo Riveiro, Idoia Cuesta, Frank Buschmann or Witchneeds were also recognised at the awards.
Categories & Awards 2023
As in previous editions, there is a prize in three categories: the Premio Artesanía de Galicia, the Premio Trayectoria and the Premio Bolsa Eloy Gesto.
The Premio Artesanía de Galicia is aimed at craft workshops registered in the Galician General Register of Crafts. It has a prize of 9,000 euros to recognise the piece of work that best reflects the lines of competitive craftsmanship in today's market, such as design, adaptation or conservation of the most characteristic traditional techniques and values of Galician craftsmanship.
The Premio Trayectoria 2023 is an honorary award and is awarded upon the proposal of the craft sector itself (registered workshops, professional craft associations, etc.). The aim is to acknowledge the consolidated professional career of a Galician crafts professional, active or retired, who is or has been registered in the Galician General Register of Crafts and with at least 20 years of demonstrable activity in the sector.
Finally, the Premio Bolsa Eloy Gesto, worth 4,000 euros, is aimed at craftsmen and craftswomen up to the age of 40 in 2022. The prize is awarded for a training proposal in a leading craft centre or workshop.
The deadline for submitting applications is between 18 and 29 September 2023. In the case of the Galician Crafts Award, the application must be submitted in person at the headquarters of the Fundación Pública Artesanía de Galicia in Santiago de Compostela, while for the other two categories, applications must be submitted electronically.
