Interview with Oriol Sarmiento, Manager of the Galician Renewable Energy Cluster
Cluergal operates as an open and multidisciplinary organisation that includes technologists, developers, distributors and, in general, entities related to the renewable energy sector and energy sustainability.
What is the value chain of the renewable energy sector in Galicia and what kind of companies does the cluster bring together?
Cluergal was created in 2010 around the auxiliary companies of the wind energy sector. Today, the cluster is made up of 87 companies, technology centres and professional associations, covering all technologies and belonging to the entire value chain of the renewable energy sector, from large project developers to assembly, construction, maintenance, engineering and services companies in general.
What are the activities of the cluster and what services does it offer to its associated companies?
The ultimate goal of Cluergal is to defend the role of the Galician supply chain in energy projects and to create synergies between companies. To this end, we develop a wide range of events, conferences, training, trade missions to sectoral fairs and other activities, as well as channelling sectoral information and maintaining the sector's dialogue with the government.
In the context of the current energy transition, what are the main challenges faced by the companies that Cluergal brings together?
Companies are constantly asking for administrative flexibility, a legal framework favourable to renewable energies and a continuous and progressive development to achieve the 2030 objectives, so that not everything is done at the last minute, because if it is, we will have a major problem with the supply of materials or with the lack of qualified workers. The latter is already a major challenge for the sector and it is therefore crucial to design and provide training to retrain workers in this and other sectors.
What are Galicia's strengths to position itself as a leading region in the field of renewable energy?
Galicia has wind and water, resources that have made it a leading region in hydroelectric and wind power generation. For the same reason, the availability of resources also makes it a benchmark in other technologies such as biomass or geothermal energy and it has enormous potential to be a benchmark in offshore wind power generation or renewable hydrogen. The greatest strength, however, is the knowledge that the companies in the value chain and their employees have already acquired over several decades. Thanks to this, today we have the capacity to successfully develop the energy transition and there are, for example, a large number of Galician companies installing wind turbines all over the world or engineering companies carrying out projects in other countries.
Cluergal is part of the Galician Green Hydrogen Industrial Alliance. What strategic opportunity does this energy represent for the Community, and how do you assess its implementation?
The development of green hydrogen is an excellent opportunity for the Galician economy. It is a necessary vector in the energy transition, to reach where electrification does not, as in the case of heavy transport or in certain industries. It is also a necessary vector for energy storage. We are attentive to the new projects to be implemented in the Community. It is very important that they are accompanied by a significant development of the supply chain through service companies and with the creation of component factories, such as electrolysers or fuel cells, in Galicia.
