Interview with Manuel Vázquez, president of the Galician Naval Cluster (Aclunaga)
The Galician naval sector is a strategic sector of the Galician economy, both for its historical tradition and its weight. 125 companies participate in the cluster, from shipyards and engineering companies to classification and certification companies, as well as suppliers of capital goods and supplies, qualification companies, installers and metal companies.
What is the value chain of the naval sector in Galicia and what type of companies does Aclunaga bring together?
The naval value chain includes all types of companies related to the construction, repair and dismantling of floating vessels. For this purpose, Aclunaga has diversified and incorporated all types of companies involved in any of the phases of such construction, whether it is a finished product or a service for the development of the work.
What are the cluster's priority areas of action in R&D?
The search for consortium projects that promote new products or services with social and territorial impact in Galicia.
What role does innovation play in ensuring the competitiveness of companies in the sector in the international context?
A fundamental aspect. Current times do not allow maintaining the same products or services without advances and adaptations to new technologies. Customers are increasingly demanding in terms of performance and adaptability of these products to the most respectful and sustainable marine environment.
What strengths and opportunities does Galicia have to continue leading the shipbuilding industry?
Difficult answer, but Galicia survives thanks to the adaptation of its companies to the type of customers who are looking for adaptable vessels with possibilities of changes in the initial project and at an average market cost, as well as speed of construction. This is in the DNA, therefore, it is expected that the latter will continue to serve as a lever and fundamental reason for success.
