Galicia exceeds 30 billion euros in exports by 2023
The Galician economy once again demonstrates its strength and dynamism by registering a 0.5% increase in exports compared to the previous year, exceeding 30 billion euros for the first time. This growth is very significant considering the Spanish economy as a whole (which recorded a 1.4% drop in exports) and the global economic challenges, among which are the fluctuation of international markets and political uncertainties, among others.
The distribution of Galician exports continues to be highly concentrated in Pontevedra and A Coruña, making them the third and fifth largest exporting provinces in Spain.
The sectors that have traditionally driven Galician exports, such as fishing, automotive and textiles, continue to be the pillars of this expansion. However, growth has also been driven by the rise of emerging sectors, reflecting the adaptability and innovation of Galician companies.
Specifically, consumer manufactures (especially textiles and clothing) and the automotive sector accounted for more than 45% of total exports. They were followed by exports of capital goods, whose share rose from 10.9% in 2022 to 17.5% of the total in 2023. This was by far the most dynamic sector, with export growth of 61.3%, in which road transport equipment stands out (+120.3% year-on-year), which is already the fourth largest export subsector after clothing, automobiles and fishery products.
In terms of geographical distribution, the European Union received 71.4% of Galician exports, with Germany, France, Italy and Portugal standing out. Outside the EU market, the growth of exports to Algeria, Mexico, Morocco and Argentina was also noteworthy.
It should also be noted that Galicia has a trade surplus of 9,138.4 million euros, making it the autonomous community with the healthiest trade balance, with all four provinces having a positive balance and Pontevedra leading the Spanish provinces with a surplus of 5,000 million euros.
This new export record not only benefits large companies, but more and more Galician SMEs are consolidating their presence in foreign markets. This has a positive impact on the local economy through the generation of employment. It also establishes a solid foundation for the region's economic future, promoting a favorable environment for investment and innovation.
